Charlotte Gainsbourg é um daqueles bons exemplos de como o DNA pode manter segredos bem-guardados durante anos. Filha do cantor e poeta francês Serge Gainsbourg e da atriz e modelo inglesa Jane Birkin, Charlotte até se aventurou pelo universo musical uma vez, gravando, aos 13 anos de idade, um álbum – "Charlotte forever" – só de canções compostas pelo pai.
Mas o cinema foi o verdadeiro responsável, pelo menos naquela época, pela incursão da garota no mundo das artes. Entre os mais de 30 filmes nos quais atuou, estão longas premiados como o drama "21 gramas", de Alejandro González Iñárritu, e o ainda inédito "The science of sleep", do sempre surpreendente Michel Gondry ("Brilho eterno de uma mente sem lembranças").
Os genes musicais adormecidos se manifestaram durante um show do Radiohead em Paris. No evento, Charlotte foi apresentada a Nicolas Godin, do Air. E o produtor inglês Nigel Godrich, que já tinha trabalhado tanto com Radiohead e Thom Yorke quanto com Air, entrou na roda naturalmente.
O resultado do encontro é "5:55", com 11 músicas compostas por Charlotte em parceria com outros músicos. Jarvis Cocker, ex-Pulp, e Neil Hannon juntaram-se ao grupo na criação das letras. Nicolas Godin e Jean Benoit Dunckel escreveram as músicas e tocaram os instrumentos, enquanto os arranjos de corda ficaram a cargo do compositor canadense David Campbell, pai de Beck. Outro grande ponto a favor está na bateria: o nigeriano Tony Allen, um dos responsáveis pela criação do afrobeat.
É esse time de primeira que acompanha Charlotte numa verdadeira viagem musical com direito a muitos pianos à Air e bateria bem marcada, ao gosto de Allen. A faixa-título, que abre o álbum, conquista o ouvinte logo de cara com sua mistura sexy de francês com inglês. O capricho nos arranjos e efeitos fica evidente à medida que o disco avança, até bater na deliciosa "The operation", um "quase" rock de batidas contagiantes.
Em menos de 45 minutos, Charlotte prova ter segurança – e, mais importante, afinação – de sobra para encontrar um lugar inteligente entre as francesas François Hardy e Emilie Simon. Sua voz é tão boa que foi sampleada por Madonna em 2001 para a introdução de "What it feels like for a girl".
Assim como seus pais – que deixaram para a posteridade o dueto "Je t'aime, moi non plus", escandalizando o mundo em 1969 –, Charlotte usa a interpretação a favor da música, como na climática "Night-time intermission". A atriz e cantora, é bom ressaltar, confere dramaticidade às composições, mas nada de caricatura. A música, no seu caso, está mesmo no sangue.

Talvez este seja o momento mais embaraçoso de toda a carreira de Serge Gainsbourg. Num programa de televisão, em que participava juntamente com uma jovem Withney Houston, Serge aparece completamente embriagado, barba por fazer, enfim, talvez a necessária fase decadente de um qualquer mito.
Que nem num momento como este perde o seu glamour, pelo menos na minha opinião. Há sempre qualquer coisa de fascinante nas celebridades que cometem actos irreverentes. Alguém precisava de embirrar com ela, de certeza que "monsieur" Serge apenas se quis antecipar. Withney sucks! (Cof cof...se o Serge tivesse ouvido dizer isto, talvez lhe tivesse dito algo mais forte ainda...ok João, para lá de pensamentos sujos :) )
